Stretch Marks

Understanding Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are a type of scarring that occurs when the skin stretches or shrinks rapidly. The most common areas affected are the tummy, buttocks, breasts, and thighs. Initially, stretch marks may appear as red or purple lines, but over time, they fade to a silvery-white colour. These marks are typically long and thin in shape.

Stretch marks form when the skin stretches too quickly, causing the collagen and elastin fibers that support the skin to tear. As the skin heals, these marks develop, often in the middle layer of skin (the dermis).

What Causes Stretch Marks?

You are most likely to develop stretch marks during times of rapid body changes such as: pregnancy, quick weight gain or loss, puberty, intense weight training, specific medical conditions, or use of corticosteroid medications.

Different Types of Stretch Marks

Stretch marks can vary in appearance based on their age, cause, location, and skin type. They are categorized into:

A. Early Stage (Red or Purple Stretch Marks) These are fresh marks that may feel itchy and are most responsive to treatment.

B. Mature Stage (White or Silver Stretch Marks) Over time, they fade and become flatter, although still visible.
